Privacy Policy

Your privacy is critically important to me. Accordingly, I have developed this Policy in order for you to understand how I collect, use, communicate and disclose and make use of personal information.

I am committed to conducting business in accordance with these principles in order to ensure that the confidentiality of personal information is protected and maintained. I have a few fundamental principles:

  • I don’t ask you for personal information unless I truly need it. (I can’t stand services that ask you for things like your gender or income level for no apparent reason.
  • I don’t share your personal information with anyone except to comply with the law, develop my products, or protect my rights.
  • I don’t store personal information on my servers unless required for the on-going operation of one of my services..
Navigating this Privacy Policy

To help you navigate our Privacy Policy, we have divided the Policy into sections to allow easy reference to key concepts. The sections are as follows:

My website address is: https://www.mauricephillips.me. This site is owned and operated by Maurice Phillips, a resident of New York state. You can reach me by email me at [email protected]

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

This site uses the Akismet anti-spam service. Akismet collects information about visitors who comment on this site. This includes the commenter’s IP address, user agent, referrer, and Site URL (along with other information directly provided by the commenter such as their name, username, email address, and the comment itself).

We may use Akismet services to process & cache your data temporarily. Please see https://automattic.com/privacy/ for more details.

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

Like most website operators, Maurice Phillips collects non-personally-identifying information of the sort that web browsers and servers typically make available, such as the browser type, language preference, referring site, and the date and time of each visitor request. Maurice Phillips’s purpose in collecting non-personally identifying information is to better understand how Maurice Phillips’s visitors use its website. From time to time, Maurice Phillips may release non-personally-identifying information in the aggregate, e.g., by publishing a report on trends in the usage of its website. Maurice Phillips also collects potentially personally-identifying information like Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for logged in users and for users leaving comments. Maurice Phillips only discloses logged in user and commenter IP addresses under the same circumstances that it uses and discloses personally-identifying information as described below, except that blog commenter IP addresses and email addresses are visible and disclosed to the administrators of the blog where the comment was left.

Certain visitors to Maurice Phillips’s websites choose to interact with Maurice Phillips in ways that require Maurice Phillips to gather personally-identifying information. The amount and type of information that Maurice Phillips gathers depends on the nature of the interaction. In each case, Maurice Phillips collects such information only insofar as is necessary or appropriate to fulfill the purpose of the visitor’s interaction with Maurice Phillips. Maurice Phillips does not disclose personally-identifying information other than as described below. And visitors can always refuse to supply personally-identifying information, with the caveat that it may prevent them from engaging in certain website-related activities.

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

The cookies I use are completely safe. In fact, many of them are used purely to provide important security features such as protecting your data.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are sent to and stored on your computer, smartphone or other device for accessing the internet, whenever you visit a website. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognize a user’s device.

I use cookies for a variety of reasons, such as to determine preferences, let users navigate between pages efficiently, verify the user and carry out other essential security checks. More information about cookies can be found on allaboutcookies.org.

I use cookies to safeguard your privacy when you’re browsing my website.

Finally, i use ‘analytics’ cookies to help us make my website better for those who visit it regularly. They help us work out what users like and don’t like and how I can improve things for you.

How I work with trusted third parties

Third parties are trusted suppliers to me. They include partners who provide important functionality to my website, such as my live chat service, and partners who help us improve my website, such as Google Analytics and Adobe, who provide statistics about which pages are visited most frequently.

The only time cookies would enable us to share personal information such as your name, address, telephone or email is when you have given us express consent to pass it on to a trusted third party.

We may show advertisements for 3rd party companies. Some of these will be general campaign-related adverts but others will be tailored to your likely interests based upon previous web browsing activity – these can be easily identified as they feature a small blue AdChoices icon in the corner of the advert. If you want to opt-out of receiving targeted adverts from me, too bad.

How I improve my email

I use email analytics and reporting tools to see how many of my emails are opened and which links receive the most clicks. Knowing which articles and topics my customers like and which they don’t like helps us improve my content and make my emails more relevant.

I maintain strict security standards and procedures to prevent unauthorized access to information about you. I will never contact you by email or otherwise to ask you to validate personal information such as your user ID, password, or account numbers.

If you wish to unsubscribe from marketing emails, please click on the link located in the footer of any marketing email you’ve received from me.

Disclosure Policy & Ethics Statement

This blog is not primarily financially driven. Regardless, beginning December 1, 2009, the FTC requires bloggers to disclose whenever there could be hidden interests or unspoken biases related to recommendations.

You have my word that I will always do my best to explain when I have any “material connection” with advertisers.

Per the FTC rules, I would need to disclose if I used an Amazon link that gets me 10 cents instead of an Amazon link that gets me 0 cents. Putting disclaimers all over the place would be tedious for me and even more tedious for readers. But rules are rules. To preserve your reading experience, please assume that, for every link and product I use or recommend, the following all hold true:

  • Any item I reference or review, I may have received for free.
  • Any link may be a referral, or affiliate link that pays me for the referral.
  • I may have a material connection with any company or product referenced on my site.

However, keep in mind;

  • If I was paid to try a product and I thought it was terrible, I will never say it’s terrific.
  • I will never base an opinion on anything related to payment.
  • I will never talk about my experience with a product if I haven’t actually tried the product.

Accessibility

I am committed to providing access to my website for individuals with disabilities. When websites and web tools are designed and coded with care, people with disabilities can use them.

The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) develops technical specifications, guidelines, techniques, and supporting resources that describe accessibility solutions. These are considered international standards for web accessibility; for example, WCAG 2.0 is also an ISO standard: ISO/IEC 40500.

Whenever possible I will try to adhere to the specifications that the W3C WAI prescribe.

If you come across anything inaccessible I would encourage you to reach out to me at [email protected] so that I can fix the issue. It’s important to me that I do my part to make the Web more accessible to people with disabilities.
